For our ‘Future Confident’ series for 2024, we’re talking to leaders across various fields about their hopes for the future of their industry and the potential challenges that stand in the way. In this edition, we speak to Veronica Zaky, Development Coordinator at Emaar Misr.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE AND CAREER SO FAR?
In my current role, I focus on developing cutting-edge real estate projects, overseeing the entire process from initial business development and research to project launch, sales, construction, and operation. I collaborate closely with a team of consultants, contractors, and designers to generate innovative ideas that align with our development objectives. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work on major development projects across the region.
WHAT’S THE ONE THING THAT HAS BENEFITTED YOU MOST OVER YOUR CAREER OR THAT COULD HAVE MADE MORE OF A DIFFERENCE?
One of the most significant benefits of my career has been the opportunity to work on a diverse array of projects. I've engaged in various developments, including residential, commercial, and hospitality ventures. However, working on a marina project has been particularly transformative for me. This experience exposed me to new codes and regulatory requirements, presented unique design challenges, and involved the intricate task of creating a comprehensive master plan that offers state-of-the-art amenities for residents, yacht owners, and hotel guests.
I am passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in real estate development, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow in this dynamic field. Each project is a new adventure, and I’m excited to contribute to creating spaces that enhance communities and enrich lives.
WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT? AND WHAT CONTINUES TO GET YOU OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING?
The highlight of my career has been the opportunity to explore new projects and learn from some of the world’s leading consultants in diverse fields such as architecture and master planning. Each day presents a fresh opportunity to learn something new, and I find immense satisfaction in the fact that real estate development is ever-evolving. The scope, brief, and typologies in each project are unique, ensuring that no two are ever identical. This constant change keeps me motivated and excited about what lies ahead.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF REAL ESTATE IN EMEA?
The EMEA region is undergoing rapid urbanization, a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. This will likely result in a growing demand for residential, commercial, and infrastructure developments in urban areas. Adapting to these changes will be essential for all stakeholders in the industry.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU’LL FACE OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS, AND WHAT CAN YOU DO / ARE YOU DOING TO PREPARE FOR IT?
One of the most significant challenges facing the real estate industry is the disruption caused by technology, particularly the rise of property technology (prop-tech). This shift is transforming how properties are bought, sold, and managed. While it presents numerous opportunities, it also necessitates substantial investment and adaptation from traditional real estate businesses. To prepare, I am actively exploring and integrating new technologies and innovative practices into our projects to stay ahead of the curve.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY?
My hopes for the future of the real estate industry center around sustainability, accessibility, and innovation. I envision a widespread adoption of sustainable building practices that minimize the environmental impact of construction and property management.
Additionally, I hope to see greater integration of technology in real estate, particularly through the development of smart cities and smart buildings. Leveraging AI, the Internet of Things, and big data can lead to more efficient, convenient, and connected living spaces, enhancing the quality of life for residents while optimizing resource use and reducing costs.
Ultimately, I am excited about the role I can play in shaping a sustainable and innovative future for the industry.
